I've been working on setting up Echolink using an Alinco 235 and an ULI (Ultimate Linking Interface). Aside from setting up the software, the only thing that needed to be done was to build an interface cable between the radio and the ULI. I found a Ham in Oregon (Mike - WB7QAZ) that had setup an Echolink node using the same hardware so I was able to really get a lot of information from him including the pinout for the Alinco.
I've got the cable all built and the software pretty much figured out but there's a low audio issue when transmitting from Echolink to the radio. Everything on the interface as well as the computer is maxed out. Tim (KC8OYE) is going to put together a small amplifier that we can put inline.
What's really odd and doesn't make any sense at all is that when you listen to a prompt from Echolink ("connected to w8dev"), the audio level is fine. When you listen to actual TX traffic from Echolink, that's when it's really quiet. It seems like anything that plays from the software is loud by anything that comes across the link is quiet. I guess we'll have to see if the amplifier helps.
Currently the Echolink node is online but it's restricted to my callsign only (it wouldn't work very well if people tried to connect because I don't have the proper antenna hooked up so you hear a lot of noise on the transmissions). I'm planning on putting it in place for further testing on Saturday before the Skywarn training.
